UNH is once more eligible to apply for NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) Grants (R15)

AREA grants support small research projects in the biomedical and behavioral sciences conducted by students and faculty in health professional schools, and other academic components that have not been major recipients of NIH research grant funds.

AREA grants will support small-scale, new or ongoing health-related meritorious research projects, including pilot research projects and feasibility studies; development, testing, and refinement of research techniques; secondary analysis of available data sets; and similar discrete research projects that demonstrate research capability.

A unique feature of AREA grants that plays to a UNH strength is that:  “Active involvement of undergraduate and graduate students in the proposed research is encouraged, and reviewers will consider whether the proposed project will expose undergraduate (preferably, if available) and graduate students to meritorious research.”

The AREA page at the NIH website has extensive information about the program, including Institute/Center interests, AREA Grant Research Objectives, FAQs, and, of course, a link to the program announcement.

Deadlines are February 25, June 25, and October 25 each year.
