How Do I Participate in JSHS?

In the Fall of each year, announcements of the Northern New England JSHS Symposium are mailed to high schools in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Announcements of the Southern New England JSHS Symposium are mailed to high schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The NNE-JSHS and the SNE-JSHS symposium is held jointly at the University of New Hampshire and the judging will be done separately for each region.

Teachers from both regions can download and then print the following two forms. The completed forms can be sent by mail to JSHS, University of New Hampshire, Conferences and Catering, Stillings Hall, Room G55, 20 Ballard Street, Durham, NH 03824 or by Fax to (603) 862-0245 at University of New Hampshire Conferences and Catering. The forms must be postmarked or received by Fax by January 20, 2012.

Teacher Application Form

Student Nomination Form

If you have any problem downloading or printing these forms, please send an email to joanne.lewis-mccoy@unh.edu or call the University of New Hampshire Conferences and Catering office at 603-862-0863 or 603-862-1900.

Nominations:

A teacher from each school may initially nominate up to five (5) students. A science, technology, engineering, mathematics or humanities teacher from each school must accompany the students to the regional symposium.

Serious students in grades 9 to 12* who have demonstrated interest in the sciences, technology, engineering or mathematics are eligible to participate in the regional symposium. We invite all high school students who complete a research project in the sciences, technology, engineering or mathematics to submit a paper on their original research. The research paper will be selected by judges to be presented as either a talk or a poster at the symposium.

To encourage interest in scientific, technological, engineering or mathematical (STEM) research, we welcome the nomination of freshman, sophomore and junior high school students without research projects to attend the symposium, also.

* To be eligible to attend, grade 12 students must submit a research paper and if selected, must present a paper at the regional JSHS symposium.

A panel of judges will review all papers submitted and select at least five students to orally present the results of their original research to the regional JSHS symposium audience at the Paper Session. Judging during the oral presentations will determine the first and second place top finalists who will be invited to make a presentation at the 50th National JSHS symposium in 2012.

The student authors of the remaining papers will be invited to present their research at a Poster Session where they will be able to discuss their papers with their peers, teachers, invited guests, and the judges in a more informal setting. Posters will be judged and the winners will be announced at the Awards Banquet being held the evening of the symposium.

Students who are nominated to attend JSHS should give assurance that they will be present for the entire Symposium.

Students who are nominated should have sufficient integrity to merit their teacher's trust and confidence so that they will reflect credit to their school and to the University of New Hampshire. It is the responsibility of each teacher to supervise his/her own students. Our objective is to provide a positive educational experience for all participants. If disruptive behavior should arise, the chaperones and staff will make appropriate decisions for the benefit of all participants.

A sample of the general Program Outline is posted on this web site.

Program Dress

Program dress is comfortable and casual. Typically, participants dress more professionally for the student paper and poster competition and for the banquet. For all other activities, you are welcome to wear slacks, jeans, shorts, tennis shoes, whatever makes you feel comfortable and eager to learn and participate.
