Antonio Pompa-Baldi to Perform at UNH Dec. 5
The UNH Celebrity Series will present pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi
Dec. 5, 2005, in the Johnson Theatre, PCAC.
Noted for his magical touch and spectacular technique, Antonio Pompa-Baldi
emerged from the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition
with a coveted silver medal as well as the Phyllis Jones Tilley
Memorial Award for the Best Performance of a New Work. He has brought
his assured touch on the keyboard to some of the world's major concert
venues, performing more than 70 engagements per season. As passionate
a chamber musician as he is a recitalist and orchestral soloist,
he is a frequent guest at numerous chamber music festivals. Antonio
Pompa-Baldi, the first appointed Steinway Artist marking Steinway's
150th anniversary, serves as Distinguished Professor of Piano at
the Cleveland Institute of Music.
The program includes Mozart’s Sonata K333, Czerny’s
Variations on a theme by Rode Op. 33, Chaconne, by Bach-Busoni,
and Chopin’s Sonata # 2 Op. 35 in B flat Minor.
“Pompa-Baldi knew how to suspend time, letting a phrase hover
and expand in poised inner stillness… [He] relied on warmth,
exquisite taste and unassertive but arresting technique…to
justify his high standing in the recent Cliburn Competition.”
