Don’t Forget to Power Down for Thanksgiving Break

Avoid being a phantom energy users during the Thanksgiving closing. Electronic devices consume energy when turned off but still plugged in. This can account for up to 30 percent of total energy used.

Before leaving for the Thanksgiving break, unplug your computer, power strip, printer, electronics, cell phone and Ipod chargers, and refrigerator. Don’t forget to remove perishables from the refrigerator and leave the door open. Finally, turn off all lights.

If everyone unplugs, the pollution reduction over the break will be equivalent to removing 47 cars from the road for an entire year and will save $20,000 in energy costs. To learn more about energy saving actions, visit http://www.sustainableunh.unh.edu/climate_ed/wildcap/index.html.
