MA: Music Education Option

The goal of the option in music education is to develop a broad knowledge at the graduate level in the fields of music education, performance, history, and theory. 


A minimum of 30 credits is required (see below).

The following four courses are required:
MUSI 955 Bibliography 3 credits
MUSI 994 Theory Seminar 3 credits
MUED 995 Special Projects in Music Education 3-4 credits
MUED 996 Foundation and Perspectives of Music Education 4 credits
Any two of the following music history courses:
MUSI 803 Music of the Renaissance 3 credits
MUSI 805 Music of the Baroque 3 credits
MUSI 807 Music of the Classical Period 3 credits
MUSI 809 Music of the Romantic Period 3 credits
MUSI 811 Music of the 20th Century 3 credits
MUSI 813 The Art Song 3 credits
MUSI 815 Survey of Opera 3 credits
MUSI 956 Readings (Antiquity to 1600) 3 credits
MUSI 957 Readings (1600-1820) 3 credits
MUSI 958 Readings (1820 to present) 3 credits
One of the following two courses:
MUED 983 Instrumental Literature and Its Performance 3 credits
MUED 984 Choral Literature and Its Performance 3 credits
subtotal of required credits   22-24 credits

 

Graduate level electives will be selected, with the advisor's approval, to bring the total credits to 30.

Each candidate will be required to complete an independent project (MUED 995) of a substantive nature on a topic of the candidate's special interest as approved by the advisor. A comprehensive exam concerning the application or philosophical, sociological, psychological, and technical aspects of music education completes the program.
