University Honors Program Staff

Program Director

Monica Chiu teaches American literature by day and, at night, reads kids’ books to her two children. This keeps her balanced for the most part, but she still likes to investigate the so called undesirable in literature. Her book, Filthy Fictions: Asian American Literature by Women, examines how culture naturalizes metaphors of dirt and filth in discussions about racial construction and sexual difference. She is editing a collection on Asian Americans in New England, while also working on a monograph investigating Asian American literature and detection. She will borrow tropes from the genre of detective fiction and tenets from visual culture to question how characters in contemporary Asian American novels construct meaning from what they perceive. She enjoys using popular culture in her courses, including music, graphic novels, and clips from movies and television shows. She has published in a variety of journals, serves on the editorial board of the journal MELUS, and has recently taken up skiing with her family.
