UNH Classified Ads - Fraud Alerts
Two Reports of Attempted Money Order Scam - July 23, 2008
Two recent reports of a variation of the money order scam have been received (see initial posting below). Individuals had posted
ads for rentals, and the respondent claimed that one of their children was going to attend UNH in the fall and needed housing.
Subsequent correspondence requested only payment information and method, and no detail about the rentals.
If you experience any questionable behavior please contact the UNH Classified Ads administrator via e-mail at unhinfo.ads@unh.edu. If you believe you have been the victim of fraudulent behavior, contact your local authorities immediately.
Student Employment ID Scam - June 26, 2008
There has been yet another fraud attempt reported. A student posted a 'Babysitter Available' ad, and received an offer to become
employed by an individual on the condition the student open a Bank of America bank account and provide the account information. This
individual attempted this with more than one student.
Please report instances of suspected fraud to UNH Police immediately at 603-862-1427.
Remember - NEVER respond to email or phone requests for unsolicited private account information (computer, banking, online accounts) to anyone. The University or your financial institutions will never ask for credentials via email.
Counterfeit Cashier's Check Scam - August 28, 2007
There has been yet another fraud attempt reported. A 'buyer' sent a Cashier's check via a UPS carrier with the
intention of paying for an item listed on the UNH Classifieds. The Cashier's check was for $3,500 more than the item was listed
for. The item owner called the bank listed on the check and found the check was a
counterfeit.
Please be aware of schemes where a buyer attempts to pay more than the item has been listed for, and asks for the difference in cash. If you agree to these schemes, you are likely to have delivered your item and your money only to discover later (often much later) the payment was fraudulent. Report any activity you find suspicious to the local authorities.
Money Order Scam - January 29, 2007
There has been another report of an attempt to defraud using the money order scam (see initial posting below). Users of the
UNH Classified Ads system should be aware of such attempts and should contact your local authorities if you
feel you have been, or about to be, victimized in this way.
Money Order Scam - March 23, 2006
There have been recent reports of users contacting individuals with ads posted on the
UNH Classified Ads offering to pay for 'for-sale' items with money orders. In most
recent cases, the money order amounts exceeded the item price, and the user requested
cash to make up the difference.
The money orders were found to be fraudulent and altered to resemble larger amounts than
originally posted. Local authorities and bank officials are involved to investigate
the source of this fraudulent behavior.
If you receive any response to an item for sale, please be cautious as to the payment method
and nature of the transaction. If you experience any questionable behavior please feel free
to contact the UNH Classified Ads administrator via e-mail at unhinfo.ads@unh.edu.
If you believe you have been the victim of fraudulent behavior, contact your local authorities.
