Please note: The Discovery Program was developed by a Faculty Senate subcommittee and is being piloted in phases. Our timeline establishes fall of 2009 as a target date for full implementation; we continue to work with the Faculty Senate to revise as needed.

History

The University of New Hampshire joined the national conversation on 'reinventing' undergraduate education in the research university in 1999 with the charge by the Faculty Senate to evaluate our general education program. The General Education Study Committee (GESC) represented by faculty from each of the schools and colleges evaluated the existing general education program and the trends in general education in research universities as discussed in the Boyer Report and later in Greater Expectations. Following intensive study with campus-wide discussion, the GESC report was submitted to the Faculty Senate in May 2002 outlining the UNH Discovery Program. An implementation committee was formed in 2002 and a year later provided a six-year implementation plan that was accepted by the Faculty Senate. According with the Implementation Plan, each component of the Discovery Program is to be piloted, assessed and voted on for full implementation. A Discovery Program Director and Advisory Committee were appointed in fall 2004 and are working on the initial processes of implementation.
