classroom
1. Overview:
Description:
"Photoshop
is the program of choice on Macs and Windows systems for editing
graphics involving photographs and is often used for Web graphics.
This demonstration shows what it can do, why it is so popular,
and why you've gotta have it!
Disclaimer:
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photodeluxe, and various plug-in
packages mentiond here are not CIS supported products.
Fine print: that means that nobody in CIS is prepared
to undertake problem resolution or troubleshooting on these
products.
Goals:
To show Photoshop's look-and-feel, features, and power, leaving
you with pointers to more information and the motivation to try
it. Examples focus on preparation of screen (Web) graphics rather
than printed graphics.
2. Background
In 12 years of Macintosh use, this may be the most amazing program I've used!
version history: 2.0, 2.5, 3.0x, 4.0 (and LEs) for Windows and Macintosh.
cost: software, hardware, training materials, and time to try-try-try.
advice: get a CD with imagery, start with basics, and experiment.
3. Measurements, modes, color models, and formats.
Bit-mapping:
raster graphics screen pixels VRAM dot pitch (mask) (< .3 mm)
Bit depth
8-bit=256 16-bit=65.5 thousand 24-bit=16.7 million
32-bit=16.7M+8-bit masking channel
Colors:

HSB color CLUT=color lookup table gamma color temperature
Processing effects:
dithering anti-aliasing transparency interleaving compression
animation sharpening color reduction
File formats

Bottom line for Web-oriented graphics:
plan for 72 dpi, 256-color monitors, aware of common 216 CLUT.
keep small (in bytes) and fast-loading.
save as GIF89a or JPEG format.
keep a high-quality master file.
